Are you skeptical about making minor repairs to your car? Fear not, there are a few things that you can do to keep any car, even a used car for sale, in peak shape. Consider the following five:
- Clean headlight lenses – Those clear plastic lens covers get dirty from being exposed to the elements. Instead of having the headlight reflector assembly changed, buy a restoration kit. These frequently have abrasive cloths and a special finishing liquid.
- Replace wiper blades – Since this should be done every six months, even on salvaged vehicles, it’s a good thing it’s so simple. Pull the wiper away from the windshield and look for a tab close to where the blade attaches to the arm. Push in the tab and slide the blade off the arm. Pop the new blade onto the arm.
- Washing and waxing – A thorough cleaning preserves the paint job and waxing keeps the shine in place while protecting the paint. Whether you opt for a spray wax or one that lets you wax and polish in one step, this is a job that every car owner should do on their own. And certainly should be done by anyone wanting to sell a used car.
- Change light bulbs – This is very simple as most bulbs either pull out and push in or have a bayonet base that you twist and pull. Finding replacement bulbs can sometimes be tedious, but an auto parts store or a franchised dealer will have what you need.
- Touch up the paint – Cover those small scratches and chips now and you’ll save a lot of money later on. Head to the auto parts store or a franchised dealer to buy the kits. Use the applicator brush or, if you’re feeling particularly creative, get a small, pointed artist’s brush.
Do these simple repairs on your own and save the tough jobs, such as replacing the transmission, for a professional.
