How To Avoid Auto Theft

By John - June 12th, 2012 07:02 AM

Autos, trucks and motorcycles are stolen all too frequently in the U.S.  The good news is that you can prevent this from happening to any vehicle, whether new or salvaged, by using common sense.  Keep in mind that theft is frequently a crime of opportunity – salvaged vehicles that look easy to break into or steal will attract thieves.  Here are some tips on preventing vehicle theft:

  1. Always roll up the windows, lock the car doors and take the key from the ignition.
  2. Never leave the area while the vehicle is running, even in your own driveway.
  3. Park in a well-lit area that has plenty of people around.
  4. Keep valuables hidden.  Consider buying a removable stereo face.
  5. Use an obvious locking device to lock the steering wheel and an auto theft alarm system.
  6. Locking lug nuts on salvaged trucks will prevent custom wheels or an externally mounted spare tire from being stolen.
  7. When buying a vehicle, remember that some makes and models of salvaged motorcycles are stolen more often than others.
  8. Keep the registration and insurance card with you instead of in the glove compartment.
  9. Disconnect the battery or the coil wire from the distributor cap if you have to leave your vehicle unattended for a long time.  Thieves often don’t have the time to figure out why a vehicle won't start.
  10. Note the key number of your ignition keys in your records.  Then have a locksmith or car dealer remove the key number.  This prevents thieves from duplicating the keys.
  11. Note the vehicle identification number (VIN) in your records and have it etched onto the doors and fenders. This deters professional thieves because they’ll have to remove the markings to resell the car.

Unfortunately, no one is safe from auto theft, but using common sense when parking or leaving your vehicle for the night will improve your odds.
